Not all carpenters are the same
A carpenter who has spent many years doing formwork on large concrete builds works differently from a carpenter who is used to kitchens and fitted joinery. Both are skilled, but each at their own kind of job. That is why we start by asking which phase the build is in and what exactly the carpenter will be doing.
Structural shell and formwork
On new builds, the work is often formwork for foundations, walls and slabs, help with installing precast elements and building the floor structures between storeys. Here, pace, safety and cooperation with the other trades on site are crucial.
Roof and building envelope
Rafters, roof underlay, battens and roof covering, fitting windows and doors, and external cladding. The aim is to get the building closed in so the interior trades can get started.
Interior fit-out
Lightweight partition walls in steel or timber, plasterboard, ceilings, floors, internal doors, trims and kitchen installation. In this phase, precision and a neat finish matter more than sheer strength.
Renovation and conversion
Replacing rotten timber, adding insulation, new windows and loft conversions. Older buildings may contain asbestos or other hazardous materials, and then the work requires the right courses and precautions.
When do you hire a carpenter?
Typically when there is a gap in your staffing that should not be filled with a permanent hire:
- a schedule that has slipped while the handover date stays fixed
- additional work in the middle of a project
- illness or holidays in your own crew
- seasonal peaks when everyone is busy at the same time
If an entire crew is to take responsibility for a defined part of the build, subcontracting may be a better choice than hiring individual carpenters.
Skilled carpenter or carpenter's mate?
Not every job requires a carpenter with a journeyman's certificate. Carrying in materials, covering up, dismantling and simple assembly can often be handled by an experienced helper, while the skilled carpenter takes care of measuring, structures and finish. Tell us how the work is split, and we can suggest a combination that suits both the job and the budget.
Tools, equipment and courses
Experienced carpenters usually have their own hand tools. Power tools, lifts, scaffolding and larger machinery are agreed job by job, so there is no doubt on the first morning.
Also let us know if the job requires specific courses, such as a course in erecting mobile scaffolding or an asbestos course for renovation work. Then we can take it into account in our proposal.
